Auckland Council/Auckland Transport update

Wolverton culverts upgrade

Project overview

In early-2019, Auckland Transport will begin a programme to replace two culverts under Wolverton Road. Both culverts are coming to the end of their design life and need to be replaced. Once installed, the new larger culverts can contend with greater amounts of rainfall and more frequent storm events, reducing the risk of flooding in the area.

The culverts allow the Whau and Avondale streams to flow under Wolverton Road. The Avondale stream culvert (Culvert 1) is located near the ambulance station, and the Whau stream culvert (Culvert 2) is near the Gull station and Olympic Park.

Benefits

Reduced risk of flooding in the area.

Enhanced attractiveness of the area.

Timeline

November 2018 – Investigation and design.

December 2018 – Site clearing and investigation.

March 2019 – Preparatory works.

July 2019 – Work to replace culverts begins.

Project details

Clearance and Investigation Works

Contractors, in conjunction with Auckland Council’s Healthy Waters team, have begun to clear debris from both streams above and below the culverts. Removing the debris will improve the flow of the stream and reduce the risk of localised flooding. It will also enhance the attractiveness of the stream around the culverts.

We are also investigating the soil composition near the culverts. This information will help our engineers design and build replacement culverts. The soil investigations are a series of bore holes and small trenches. These will be filled in once the soil testing work has ended.

Preparatory Works

Further preparatory work will begin in early-2019. Some of the work will focus on protecting all of the services and utilities that are located under the road, such as gas and water pipes. Contractors will dig a trench to inspect the condition of the buried utilities pipes.

Once the utilities have been assessed, engineers will determine the best method to protect the utilities when the culverts are being replaced.

Our contractors will work with specialist consultants to minimise any downstream effects during these works.

Culvert Replacement

We anticipate that construction to replace the culverts will start in July 2019. We will get back in touch with you when we have more detailed timeline.

We understand that this project is going to be disruptive. We will work with the contractors to ensure any disruption will be kept to a minimum.
